Dental Sedation in Knaresborough

At The Dental Hub Knaresborough, we understand that visiting the dentist can be daunting for some patients. Whether you feel nervous, have a low pain threshold, or require a longer procedure, conscious sedation offers a safe, calming way to receive the treatment you need — without fear or discomfort.

What is conscious sedation?

Conscious sedation is a technique used to help you feel deeply relaxed during your dental procedure. You’ll remain awake and able to respond, but will feel drowsy, calm, and anxiety-free – with little to no memory of the treatment afterwards.

We use fast-acting, proven sedatives such as midazolam and propofol, administered by our highly qualified Consultant Anaesthetist who remains with you throughout your treatment to monitor your comfort and safety.

Meet our Anaesthetist: Dr Jonathan Bilmen

Jonathan is Consultant Anaesthetist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Clinical Director for the Head & Neck Clinical Services Unit. He specialises in Neurosurgical anaesthesia and Head and Neck surgical anaesthesia, holding the role of honorary senior lecturer at the University of Leeds. Dr Bilmen is also an Advanced Life Support instructor and editor for the British Journal of Anaesthesia Education. When you’re in his care, you can be confident that your wellbeing is in expert hands.

Why choose sedation?

Sedation can make all the difference if you:

Feel anxious or fearful about dental treatment

Struggle with a strong gag reflex

Have heightened sensitivity or a low pain threshold

Find it difficult to sit for extended appointments

Are undergoing longer or more complex treatments

Most patients report feeling calm and unaware of the treatment taking place – and many remember little, if anything, afterwards.

What to expect:

  1. Before treatment
  • You’ll be welcomed by our friendly team and shown to a comfortable space
  • A trusted friend or family member must accompany you to your appointment, take you home and care for you for 24 hours afterwards.
  • Our anaesthetist will review your medical history, explain the sedation process and answer any final questions.
  1. During Treatment
  • The anaesthetist will administer the sedation, which will help you feel deeply peaceful and drowsy.
  • You will remain conscious, but calm and unaware of time passing.
  • Throughout the procedure, the anaesthetist will monitor your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels while your dentist carries out your treatment.

  1. After Your Treatment
  • You’ll rest in our dedicated recovery area while the sedation wears off
  • You may feel groggy or sleepy — this is normal and should wear off within a few hours
  • Your companion will take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day
