Tooth Whitening

A bright, white smile can make a big difference to your confidence — and at The Dental Hub Knaresborough, we offer safe, effective tooth whitening treatments tailored to your needs.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

Over time, it’s natural for teeth to darken. Everyday factors like tea, coffee, red wine, smoking, and even certain foods can stain your teeth. As we age, the white outer enamel wears away, making the yellowish inner layer (dentine) more visible. Some people also have naturally darker teeth — and that’s perfectly normal.

What are the benefits of tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a non-invasive way to enhance your smile, helping you feel brighter, fresher, and more confident. It’s an excellent choice for patients with healthy teeth and gums who want to reduce stains and lighten discolouration caused by diet, ageing or lifestyle factors.

How does whitening work?

Tooth whitening uses a professional-grade peroxide gel to gently and safely lift stains from the teeth. Only qualified dental professionals can legally carry out this treatment in the UK. That’s because it’s important your teeth and gums are healthy before whitening begins — and that the treatment is suitable for you.

Before starting, your dentist will:

Assess the cause of any discolouration

Check for underlying dental issues

Explain expected results and answer your questions

We may recommend a scale and polish beforehand for best results.

Your Whitening Options

We offer two clinically proven treatments:

Home Whitening

This is a flexible, gradual option that fits easily around your routine.

How it works:

We take impressions to make custom-fit whitening trays

You’ll return in about a week to collect your trays and gel

Your dentist will check the fit and show you how to use them safely

You’ll wear the trays daily (or overnight) for 10–14 days

This method provides excellent results with minimal sensitivity, and you can reuse your trays for top-ups later.

In-Surgery Whitening

If you want faster results, our in-surgery whitening can brighten your smile in just one appointment.

How it works:

We confirm your suitability and take impressions for home trays

In the clinic, we apply whitening gel and activate it using a special LED light

The process is repeated over three short sessions during the visit

You’ll go home with custom trays and gel for future maintenance

Ideal for special events or those who prefer to leave whitening to the professionals.

What results can I expect?

Home whitening: noticeable improvement within 1–2 weeks

In-surgery whitening: immediate results after your appointment

Your final shade depends on the natural colour and condition of your teeth. Whitening won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings, or veneers — but we can advise if replacements would help match your brighter smile.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Yes — when carried out under the supervision of a dental professional, whitening is very safe. Some people experience mild sensitivity during treatment, but this usually settles quickly.

We don’t recommend whitening during pregnancy, as its safety hasn’t been fully studied.

Maintaining your smile

To keep your smile brighter for longer:

Avoid smoking and stain-causing drinks during and after treatment

Practice good oral hygiene

Use your whitening trays for occasional top-ups as needed

We offer refill syringes of whitening gel for ongoing maintenance.
