Dental Examination When you’re a new patient at the practice and attend a ‘new patient examination’, your dentist will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues. They’ll take a detailed record of your teeth, recording factors such as existing fillings, missing teeth and gum health. They’ll also take routine x-rays. After examination, your dentist will provide oral heath advice and recommend necessary treatment (if applicable). You’ll also have the opportunity at this appointment to ask questions or discuss anything you’d like to improve about your smile. As a regular patient returning for a routine exam, your dentist will carry out a full check-up and give advice relevant to your needs. |
Emergency Appointment We have emergency appointments available with our dentists everyday for patients in pain. When you attend your appointment, your dentist will carry out an assessment of the area causing you discomfort and will always try to carry out any temporary emergency treatment necessary to help get you out of pain. You may need to book another appointment for further treatment if needed. |
Radiographs Your dentist will regularly take x-rays in order to be able to assess your teeth and bones. These are used as both baseline records and to plan required treatment. There are various types of x-rays which include: Intraoral – this type of x-ray is taken by positioning a film inside your mouth and creates a 2D digital image of a section of your mouth where teeth may need assessment. Panoral – this type of x-ray is taken using a machine which rotates around your head to create a 2D image of your entire jaw and teeth. CBCT – this type of x-ray is also taken using a machine which rotates around your head to create a 3D scan of a section of your teeth and jaw. This type of scan is used to plan more complex treatments such as implant treatment. |
Hygiene Services Scale & Polish – A routine hygiene appointment involves a thorough scale and polish of your teeth. This means that the hygienist or dentist will remove any plaque/tartar that has built up around the gumline as well as any staining on your teeth. It’s usually advised that this treatment is carried out at least every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Periodontal Treatment – This treatment is only carried out if a patient has been diagnosed with ‘periodontal disease’ (gum disease). This means the hygienist will clean beneath the gums to remove all plaque and debris built up in areas patients are not able to clean themselves. The hygienist will also discuss your oral health routine and give advice on aids such as interdental brushes which can help improve the condition of your gums. For patients who have active gum disease, this treatment is recommended every three months to help prevent tooth loss. |
Fillings A filling is usually placed into a tooth where there has been decay, after the decay is removed. Decay can be painless and go unnoticed, hence the importance of regular check-ups with your dentist. When decay progresses into a tooth, you may experience pain and need the tooth removing. There are various filing materials that are used to repair a tooth. Your dentist will discuss the options with you before carrying out any treatment. Amalgam – This type of filling material is silver in colour but is a very strong and durable material used for fillings mainly on back teeth. Composite – This type of filling material is more aesthetic as it is tooth coloured and can be matched very closely to a patient’s natural tooth shade. |
Root Fillings A root filling is carried out to save a tooth from being extracted if decay is present in the root canal. Your dentist will remove the decay and then disinfect and fill the root canals. In most cases, your dentist will recommend a crown is placed on this tooth because root canal treatment can cause a tooth to become brittle. A crown will strengthen the tooth and improve its longevity. |
Crowns Dental crowns are used to restore and protect heavily weakened or damaged teeth. They cover the entire tooth to replicate the original tooth and can be used to change the shape or disguise discoloured teeth. Crowns can be made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic or metal. Your dentist will advise you on the options available. |
Composite Direct Veneers – ‘Composite Bonding’ This process is more commonly known as composite bonding and can help you to create the appearance of a brand new smile. This process involves placing composite filling material on your teeth to improve their shape and appearance. Patients often choose to have their teeth whitened alongside this treatment in order to also brighten their smile. |
Porcelain Veneers A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain used to cover the front of a tooth, rather than covering the whole tooth like a crown. Veneers are extremely thin but once bonded to the tooth are very strong and can be used to create a whiter smile that looks natural. |
Dentures A denture is a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth. Your dentist can make you either a full or partial denture depending on how many teeth need replacing. Dentures can be used to replace one, several or all teeth. With modern technology and advanced techniques, dentures can be highly aesthetic and can take years off your appearance. Dentures can also be retained by implants to help secure them in place. Speak to one of our implant surgeons to find out whether this is an option for you. |
Bridge A bridge is used to restore a gap between teeth and is secured in place by the remaining teeth either side. Just like with crowns, they can be made from a variety of materials. This option of replacing teeth is often more preferable to patients not wanting to use a removable appliance such as a denture. |
Extraction Sometimes there are no more options available to restore a tooth and it needs to be removed. The vast majority of extractions can be completed by your dentist, however more complex extractions may need referring to other dentists in the practice who have undertaken further training and have more experience with this type of treatment. If you are particularly nervous about an extraction, you can be sedated, which will take away any anxiety and help you to feel calm and relaxed throughout your treatment. |
Orthodontic Treatment We offer teeth straightening treatments that can create the smile you’ve always wanted. Tooth straightening can be carried out either by wearing a series of removable clear aligners (we offer Invisalign treatment as well as other brands of clear aligners) or by placing tooth-coloured braces on your teeth for a period of time. Your dentist can advise which treatment would be best for you and your desired smile. |
Implant Treatment Dental implants are a method of replacing missing teeth. A dental implant is a small titanium screw that works much like the root of a tooth when placed into the jawbone. This then supports a crown which both looks and feels like a natural tooth and is proven to be strong and durable. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth or several missing teeth. A single implant can be fitted to an implant crown to replace one tooth, or a bridge or denture can be attached to replace several missing teeth. Dental implants can also be used to replace ill-fitting dentures. Although implants have both the longest treatment time, they are most similar to a natural tooth and will last the longest compared with a bridge or denture. |
Tooth Whitening Tooth whitening is a non-invasive procedure that can significantly improve the aesthetics of your teeth and quickly give you a much brighter and more confident smile. For patients who have healthy, straight but discoloured or darkened teeth it is a great option and a preferred alternative to achieving a beautiful smile, than more expensive and invasive options such as crowns or veneers. We offer two options for whitening: a take-home kit or an in-surgery treatment. The take-home kit involves wearing whitening trays filled with gel which will whiten your teeth gradually each day. Alternatively, the in-surgery treatment will give you instant results following your appointment. This treatment involves placing gel on your teeth, which is then activated by a light. Both options can help you to achieve your desired outcome. |
Facial Aesthetics We offer various facial aesthetic treatments to keep your skin looking youthful and healthy. Our non-surgical treatments will help fight the factors which affect your skin naturally such as the sun, smoking, ageing and your diet. Please ask a member of our team for more information. |
Sedation Some people find that going to the dentist fills them with anxiety. Sedation can take away the anxiety and leave you feeling calm, relaxed and often a little sleepy. You’ll be unaware of the dental treatment being carried out and you’re likely not to remember anything of the procedure. Even people who don’t feel anxious about dental treatment will choose to have sedation for long or complicated procedures so that they can feel completely relaxed throughout the appointment. We still use local anaesthetic so there’s no pain during the treatment either. |
Mouthguards Your dentist will always advise that you wear a mouthguard if you are playing contact sports. Your mouthguard is completely customisable with colours and initials of your choice – you can even have your mouthguard made in your team colours! |
Nightguard Your dentist will advise that you wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth at night. Wearing a nightguard will help to prevent your teeth chipping, fracturing and wearing down. It can also help to prevent headaches caused by grinding your teeth. Speak to your dentist if you think you grind your teeth unintentionally and often wake up with headaches because of this. |
Retainers Your dentist will advise you to wear a retainer after teeth straightening treatments, to avoid your teeth moving back to their original positions. We offer both fixed and removable retainers. A removable retainer is usually worn at night when you sleep. Alternatively, you can have a fixed retainer which is bonded to the back of your front teeth so is not visible. |
