Dental Examination As a new patient at the practice, your first appointment will be a ‘new patient examination’. During a new patient exam, your dentist will assess your teeth, gums and soft tissues, taking note of existing fillings, missing teeth and gum health as well as taking x-rays. Your dentist will also discuss your oral health and provide advice on any treatment needed (if applicable). At this initial appointment, you’ll also be able to ask questions and speak to your dentist about improving your smile if you wish. When you return for a routine exam as a regular patient, your dentist will carry out a full check-up and advise accordingly. |
Emergency Appointment If you’re in dental pain, we have emergency appointments available with our dentists everyday. At an emergency appointment, your dentist will assess the area causing you discomfort and will then carry out any temporary emergency treatment needed to help get you out of pain. You may need to book another follow-up appointment for permanent treatment depending what treatment is needed. |
Radiographs During check-up appointments, your dentist will regularly take x-rays which are used to assess your teeth and bones. X-rays are used to plan treatment needed and as a baseline record to refer back to. We have the facilities to take various types of x-rays at the practice, which include: Intraoral – this type of x-ray creates a 2D digital image of a section of your mouth where teeth may need treatment. It’s taken by positioning a film inside your mouth. Panoral – this type of x-ray creates a 2D image of your entire jaw and teeth and is taken using a machine which rotates around your head. CBCT – this type of x-ray creates a 3D scan of a section of your teeth and jaw. This type of scan is used to plan more complex treatments such as implant treatment and is taken using a machine which rotates around your head. |
Hygiene Services Scale & Polish – During a routine hygiene appointment, the hygienist or dentist will remove any plaque/tartar built up and then will remove any staining on your teeth. Your dentist or hygienist will usually advise that you should have a scale and polish at least every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Periodontal treatment – If you’ve been diagnosed with ‘periodontal disease’ (gum disease), your dentist will advise that you have periodontal treatment with the hygienist. During this treatment the hygienist will clean beneath your gums to remove plaque and debris built up in areas that you can’t clean yourself. The hygienist will also talk to you about your oral health routine and give advice on how you can improve the condition of your gums alongside their treatment. Your hygienist will advise that you have this treatment every three months if you have active gum disease as it can help to prevent tooth loss. |
Fillings When a tooth has decay, this must be removed and replaced by a filling. It’s important that you have regular check-ups so that your dentist can check your teeth for decay which can be painless and go unnoticed. If decay is left in the tooth and therefore progresses, you may experience pain and need the tooth removing. Your dentist will discuss with you the type of filling materials that are available and will recommend the best suited to you. Below are some of the filling materials which may be used: Amalgam – This type of filling material is mainly used on back teeth as it is silver in colour but is a very strong and durable material. Composite – This type of filling material is tooth coloured and is therefore more aesthetic and can be matched very closely to the natural shade of a patient’s teeth. |
Root Fillings If decay is present in the root canal, a root filling is carried out to save a tooth from being extracted. This process involves the removal of decay from the root canals, then disinfecting and filling the root canals. Once a root filling is carried out, the tooth will become brittle and weakened, so your dentist will recommend placing a crown on this tooth in order to strengthen the tooth and improve its longevity. |
Crowns When a tooth is heavily broken down, a dental crown is used to restore and to protect it. A crown covers the entire tooth to replicate the shape and size of the original tooth. Crowns are made in a dental lab and can be made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic or metal. Your dentist will recommend materials which are best suited to your teeth. |
Composite Direct Veneers – ‘Composite Bonding’ This process, more commonly known as composite bonding, helps you to create the appearance of a brand new smile. To carry out this treatment, your dentist will place composite filling material on your teeth to improve their shape and appearance. Patients will often also whiten their teeth alongside this treatment to make their overall smile brighter. |
Porcelain Veneers Veneers are used to create a whiter smile that looks natural. This treatment involves using a thin layer of porcelain to cover the front of a tooth, rather than covering the whole tooth. Although veneers are extremely thin, they are very strong once bonded to the tooth. |
Dentures A denture is a removable appliance that can be used to replace either one, several or all missing teeth. Depending on how many teeth need replacing, your dentist will make you either a full or partial denture. Advanced techniques and modern technology used to construct dentures can make them highly aesthetic and take years off your appearance. If you have ill-fitting dentures, they can be retained by implants to better secure them in place. |
Bridge If you don’t like the idea of wearing a removable appliance such as a denture, a bridge could be used to restore gaps between healthy teeth. However, the adjacent teeth must be healthy as they will be used to support the bridge. Like crowns, bridges can be made from a variety of materials. |
Extraction When there are no options available to restore a tooth, it will need to be removed. The majority of extractions will be completed by your dentist. However, some extractions may need referring to other dentists in the practice who have undertaken further training and have more experience with this type of treatment. Sedation is available for patients who are nervous about dental treatment. Having sedation alongside your treatment will take away any anxiety and help you to feel calm and relaxed throughout your treatment. |
Orthodontic Treatment Our dentists can help you to create the smile you’ve always wanted with teeth straightening treatments. This treatment can correct misaligned teeth with either fixed or removable braces including Invisalign and other brands of clear aligners. Your dentist will advise the best treatment for you considering your desired outcome. |
Implant Treatment Missing teeth can be replaced by dental implants, which are small titanium screws that act like the root of a tooth when placed into the jawbone. The implant will support a crown which looks and feels like a natural tooth and is very strong and durable. Dental implants can replace one or several missing teeth. They can also be used to secure ill-fitting dentures. Bridges and dentures often need replacing after some time; implants will last longer than both. |
Tooth Whitening Tooth whitening can significantly improve the aesthetics of your teeth and quickly give you a much brighter and more confident smile. Tooth whitening is a non-invasive procedure and a great way of achieving a beautiful smile. There are two options available for whitening: a take-home kit and an in-surgery treatment. If you choose the take-home kit, you’ll need to wear whitening trays filled with gel which will whiten your teeth gradually each day. Alternatively, if you choose the in-surgery treatment, your dentist will place gel on your teeth which is activated by a light. You’ll see instant results following your appointment with this option. |
Facial Aesthetics Our dentists are able to provide various non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments which can help to keep your skin looking youthful and healthy. These treatments will also help to fight the factors which affect your skin naturally such as the sun, smoking, ageing and your diet. Please ask a member of our team for more information. |
Sedation Often people can feel nervous or anxious about going to the dentist. Having sedation alongside your treatment can take away the anxiety and can leave you feeling calm, relaxed and often a little sleepy. If you have sedation, you’ll be unaware of the dental treatment being carried out and you’re likely not to remember anything of the procedure. For long or complicated procedures, even people who don’t feel anxious about dental treatment choose to have sedation so that that they can feel completely relaxed throughout their appointment. Local anaesthetic is still used so there’s no pain during the treatment either. |
Mouthguards If you play any contact sports, your dentist will advise you to wear a mouthguard. The mouthguards we can make you are completely customisable with colours and initials of your choice. |
Nightguard If you grind your teeth at night, your dentist will advise that you wear a nightguard when you sleep. This can help to prevent your teeth from chipping, fracturing or wearing down. If you often wake up with headaches due to grinding, wearing a nightguard will help to prevent this. |
Retainers If you’ve had your teeth straightened, your dentist will advise that you wear retainers to avoid your teeth moving back to their original positions. We can custom make you either fixed or removable retainers, or both. A removable retainer should be worn at night when you sleep, whereas a fixed retainer will be bonded to your teeth. |
