Dental Examination After you’ve registered as a new patient at the practice, your first appointment will be a ‘new patient examination’. At this appointment, your dentist will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues as well as taking a detailed record of your teeth. They’ll take note of factors such as fillings, missing teeth and gum health. Routine x-rays will also be taken. After they’ve examined your teeth, your dentist will provide oral health advice and recommend necessary treatment (if applicable). You’ll also have chance to ask questions and speak to your dentist about how you’d like to improve your smile. When you return for routine examinations as a regular patient, your dentist will carry out a full check-up and advise whether any treatment is needed. |
Emergency Appointment For patients in pain or discomfort, we have emergency appointments available with our dentists everyday. If you attend the practice for an emergency appointment, your dentist will assess the area causing you discomfort and will then carry out any temporary emergency treatment needed to help get you out of pain. Your dentist may then ask you to book another appointment for permanent treatment if needed. |
Radiographs X-rays are used to assess your teeth and bones so your dentist will take x-rays regularly at your check-up appointments. X-rays are initially used as a baseline record to refer back to but can also be used to plan your treatment. There are various types of x-rays we’re able to take at the practice, which include: Intraoral – your dentist will position a film inside your mouth to take this x-ray, which will then create a 2D digital image of a section of your mouth so that certain teeth can be assessed. Panoral – your dentist will position you inside a machine which will rotate around your head to take this type of x-ray, which will create a 2D image of your entire jaw and teeth. CBCT – similar to a panoral x-ray, your dentist will position you inside a machine which rotates around your head. A CBCT scan creates a 3D image of a section of your teeth and jaw that can be used to plan more complex treatments, such as implant treatment or complex extractions. |
Hygiene Services Scale & Polish – A thorough scale and polish of your teeth will be carried out to remove any plaque/tartar built up on your teeth as well as any visible staining. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, your dentist or hygienist will usually advise that you should have a scale and polish at least every six months. Periodontal Treatment – This treatment is carried out by a hygienist if you have been diagnosed with ‘periodontal disease’ (gum disease). It involves cleaning beneath your gums to remove plaque and debris built up in areas that you can’t clean yourself. The hygienist will talk you through an ideal oral health routine and give advice on aids such as interdental brushes which can help to improve the condition of your gums. If you have active gum disease, your hygienist will recommend this treatment every three months to help prevent tooth loss. |
Fillings If a tooth has decay, the decay must be removed and replaced with a filling. When decay is present, it can be painless and go unnoticed, hence the importance of regular check-ups with your dentist. When a tooth is left untreated, decay will progress further into the tooth and will eventually cause pain and it may be necessary to have the tooth removed, depending on the extent. A number of filling materials can be used to repair a tooth and your dentist will recommend the best suited to your tooth. Amalgam – This type of filling material is silver in colour and is therefore mainly used on back teeth. Amalgam is a very strong and durable material. Composite – This type of filling material is tooth coloured and can be matched very closely to the natural shade of a patient’s teeth. This is the more aesthetic option which is sometimes preferable for some patients. |
Root Fillings A root filling is carried out when decay is present in the root canal. The decay is removed and the canals are then disinfected and filled. This process saves a tooth from being extracted. However, a tooth will become brittle and weakened following root canal treatment so your dentist is likely to recommend placing a crown over the tooth in order to strengthen it and improve its longevity. |
Crowns Dental crowns ae used to restore and protect teeth that are heavily broken down. A crown replicates the original tooth by covering the entire tooth and can change the shape or disguise discoloured teeth. Materials such as porcelain, ceramic or metal can be used to make crowns. Your dentist will discuss the options available and advise the best suited to your teeth. |
Composite Direct Veneers – ‘Composite Bonding’ Composite bonding is a treatment which is used to help you to create the appearance of a brand new smile. The process involves placing composite filling material in various shapes and sizes on your teeth to improve their shape and appearance. Patients will often have their teeth whitened alongside this treatment, which results in a brighter smile. |
Porcelain Veneers A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is used to cover the front of a tooth, rather than covering the whole tooth like a crown and are used to create a whiter smile that looks natural. Once veneers are bonded to a tooth, they are very strong and can be used to change the size and shape of your teeth to create a more aesthetic smile. |
Dentures Missing teeth can be replaced by a denture. Dentures can be used to replace one, several or all missing teeth. Advanced techniques and modern technology can create highly aesthetic dentures which can take years off your appearance. If you’d prefer not to wear a removable appliance, a denture can be retained by implants. Book an appointment with one of our implant surgeons to find out whether this is an option for you, as they can also help to secure ill-fitting dentures. |
Bridge A bridge is used to restore missing teeth and is sometimes more preferable for patients who don’t want to wear a removable appliance such as a denture. A bridge is supported by the adjacent teeth so these teeth must be heathy for a bridge to be suitable. Like crowns, bridges can also be made from a number of materials. |
Extraction If there are no other options available to restore a tooth, it will need to be removed. Most extractions will be carried out by your regular dentist. However, some extractions which are more complex may need to be referred to other dentists in the practice who have undertaken further training and have more experience with this type of treatment. For patients who are nervous about dental treatment, sedation is available. Being sedated for dental treatment removes anxiety and helps patients to feel calm and relaxed throughout their treatment. |
Orthodontic Treatment Teeth straightening treatments can be used to help create the smile you’ve always wanted. Misaligned teeth can be corrected by either wearing a series of removable clear aligners (we offer Invisalign treatment as well as other brands of clear aligners) or by placing tooth-coloured braces on your teeth for a period of time. At your initial consultation, your dentist will talk to you about fixed and removable braces and will advise the best treatment for you considering your desired outcome and preferences. |
Implant Treatment Dental implants can be used to replace missing teeth. A dental implant is a small titanium screw which acts like the root of a tooth when it is placed into the jawbone. The implant then supports a crown, which both looks and feels like a natural tooth and is proven to be strong and durable. Dental implants are used to replace one or several missing teeth. An implant crown can be fitted to a single implant to replace one tooth, or a bridge or a denture can be fitted to several implants to replace several missing teeth. Ill-fitting dentures can be secured using dental implants. Although implants have the longest treatment time, they are most similar to a natural tooth and will last the longest compared with a bridge or a denture. |
Tooth Whitening You can achieve a much brighter and more confident smile with tooth whitening. This is a non-invasive procedure which can significantly improve the aesthetics of your teeth quickly. If you have healthy, straight but discoloured or darkened teeth, tooth whitening is a great option and a preferred alternative to achieving a beautiful smile, than much more invasive options such as crowns or veneers. There are two methods which can be used to whiten your teeth: a take-home kit and an in-surgery treatment. You’ll be able to whiten your teeth gradually each day using the take-home kit. With this treatment, you’ll need to wear whitening trays filled with gel. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to see instant results, you could choose the in-surgery treatment where the dentist will place gel on your teeth which is activated by a light. Both options will help you to achieve your desired outcome. |
Facial Aesthetics In order to keep your skin looking youthful and heathy, we offer various non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments. These treatments will help fight the factors which affect your skin naturally such as the sun, smoking, ageing and your diet. Please ask a member of our team for more information. |
Sedation When going to the dentist, patients often feel nervous or anxious. Sedation can help to take away the anxiety and leave you feeling calm, relaxed and often a little sleepy. When dental treatment is provided under sedation, patients are unaware of the treatment being carried out and they are likely not to remember anything of the procedure. Even people who don’t feel anxious about dental treatment will choose to have sedation for long or complicated procedures so that they can feel completely relaxed throughout the appointment. Local anaesthetic is still used so there’s no pain during the treatment either. |
Mouthguards It’s important that you wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports, to protect your teeth from damage. Your dentist will take impressions to make a mouthguard for you, which is completely customisable with colours and initials of your choice – you can even have your mouthguard made in your team colours! |
Nightguard If you grind your teeth at night and often wake up with headaches, your dentist will recommend that you wear a nightguard when you sleep. You’ll be able to help prevent headaches and protect your teeth from chipping, fracturing and wearing down. |
Retainers Following any teeth straightening treatments, your dentist will always advise you to wear a retainer to avoid your teeth moving back to their original positions. Either fixed or removable retainers can be used to hold your teeth in their new positions. A removable retainer is usually worn at night when you sleep, however if you do not wish to wear a removable appliance, you can have a fixed retainer. This is not visible as it is bonded to the back of your front teeth. |
